So it looks like everyone and their brother uses torrents do download various stuff on to their computers because they don't want to spend money and get it the legal way. Who, like me, avoids them at all cost? i'm sure there's only a few people.

Post 2 by louisa (move over school!) on Tuesday, 17-Jun-2008 14:15:37

I don't use it, I don't know to much about torents and how it works.

Post 3 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Tuesday, 17-Jun-2008 15:42:56

i don't use them, because i don't have a very fast connection

Post 4 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 4:39:28

never used them, and probably never will..unless someone shows me how it works. lol

Post 5 by The Lil Dark Piggy (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 11:25:35

I've used torrents, and personally, I don't blame the people for getting the stuff illegally they want to much damn money for certain things especially certain programs. Just saying. But I only download music from them.

Post 6 by louisa (move over school!) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 13:19:00

I agree with you dan, smiles.

Post 7 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 13:42:59

It looks like everyone would use them if they new how or if the connection was faster. I must be the minority.

Post 8 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 16:46:46

I don't use torents either. I find torents take way to long anfd also you don't know what sort of crap could come with the fikles

Post 9 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 16:48:39

Using torrents wery often. For software, video, music and sounds - there are wery good sound archives if you know how to find them.
I'm using some degree of hiding - because of copyrights, but I think, that it'll prove nothing for them. If they want, they can call company, which proxies I'm using and get my IP - I think.

Post 10 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Wednesday, 18-Jun-2008 17:52:13

even if my connection was faster, still wouldn't use them

Post 17 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 15:54:46

use torrents for tv shows. do not download games or programs though they never work.

Post 18 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 16:53:01

It's difficult to find working torrent - meaning games and apps.
But music and video and ssound is great.
using www.isohunt.com and www.torrentz.com for searching.

Post 22 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Friday, 20-Jun-2008 12:46:36

I use torrents for music but that's it. I use micro torrent to get them, and go to google and type in allinurl: torrent "name of torrent", to find them.

Post 23 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 20-Jun-2008 13:08:57

I'm using bit torrent, but I have portable azureus and utorrent.

Hahahahaha! It might sound a stupid question, but what are torrents? Are they websites? I've heard of peopel using them, but ...

Post 27 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 11:01:07

well, the file with extension torrent is actually lots of links to file, that you want to download. This file is hosted by many people, on they computers. So you can download parts of file from multiple people.
When you are downloading torrent, you are seeding (sharing) it.
That's the trick of illegality of torrents. If you'r downloading it, it's OK.
But seeding copirighted contend is illegal.
But without seeding, you can't download - torrent won't allow it.
So try to download only some safe things, or - as me - hope the best.

Post 28 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 16:57:24

use bitlord. yes people might hate it but I tryed utorrent and it got the slowest speeds.

Post 29 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 17:27:37

Have used torrents in the past, now use napster for music. Tried bear share also and it kept crashing. Napster's fast, and not that expensive, so I like it.

Post 30 by kl1964 (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 21-Jun-2008 18:01:26

I've never learned how to use torrents. Maybe I should learn, I don't know.

Post 31 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 0:42:54

i don't think they are so difficult. That's what makes them so tempting to use. I used them for a short time, until all that stuff happened to my computer. I don't think it was because of them, but still. I don't trust program cracks anymore either. I almost had one that would've dammaged my computer a second time. We didn't know it at the time though.

Post 32 by b3n (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 4:44:05

you do realise that your downloading things of random computers every time you go on the internet?

Post 33 by hamster (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 6:07:14

Yes, that's the problem.
You can download absolutelly anything - harmfull or not, that's your problem. that's the risk.
I'm using bittorrent and don't have a problem.

Post 34 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 11:50:27

Any time you use the internet you download something whether you realize it or not. When you visit this site, it downloads the page to your computer. You download sounds from this website when you listen to the system sounds, or to audio profiles. (For proof, go looking in your temporary internet files. You'll find all the sounds you download from here in there, unless you empty your temp internet folder.) Also, a server is just a computer. So any time you go to a new website, you're downloading something from a "strange" computer.

Post 35 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Sunday, 22-Jun-2008 18:44:25

what happened to your computer?

Post 36 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Wednesday, 02-Jul-2008 16:10:34

That's a good point. You know what, they should make Lime Wire JAWS accessible. I use Bear Share now, but I would rather use Lime Wire...you hear less about viruses and crap going through there.

Post 37 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Wednesday, 02-Jul-2008 22:15:29

True true. Bearshare's good, just watch what ya grab. But I do agree, I have more friends who use limewire then bearshare, and they all say its much better.

Post 38 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Wednesday, 02-Jul-2008 22:48:04

How big is limewire? The reason I'm asking this is because I don't have a fast connection.

Post 39 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Wednesday, 02-Jul-2008 23:31:15

Limewire will work for you if you don't have a fast connection. Don't know how big the actual setup file is, but forget it if you use Jaws. There's no way you'll be able to use it. I'm surprised no one has thought to make scripts for it yet.

Post 40 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 03-Jul-2008 12:39:18

Make that for any screen reader.

Post 41 by Squiggles (Account disabled) on Thursday, 03-Jul-2008 21:32:31

first off torrents can be slow, depending on seeders. Most if not all of mine flew. Why pay for thing when you can get them for free? Think about it. People might say that the company is losing sales, but explain to me how they are losing when they haven't sold? So assume a company is putting something like a CD or software on the market and no one bought it. Are you going to tell me they've lost sales? They haven't lost! They just haven't gained a thing. Same deal with piracy. It is like blaming every person who hasn't been born yet of making companies quote lose quote money. That is a bunch of bull and a misconception. They don't lose money unless they file bankrupcy! They just never gain. So again, back to the beginning. Who is being killed in the process of torrents? People say that if less people buy a product like software then the price will increase. So you are saying now that if people simply have no interest in the product that the price will go up? These companies never know what the real reason is they mostly default to piracy. But maybe they're product sucks and they're realizing it like FS have. Oh, of course they have, why do you think they've tried the new ILM scheme? Well that didn't go over too well. Piracy is a good thing and it will never die. I'll give you one more good example. In WWII when the Germans had their encrypting computers or main frames is they were back then, and us Americans cracked that code, we were successful. Now some may argue this, however cracking is cracking. Piracy is piracy and the government is a hippocrit! If they can do it, we can do it. They are men just like you and me.

Post 42 by Squiggles (Account disabled) on Thursday, 03-Jul-2008 21:35:22

Oh and a note on those other p2p clients. Bearshare, imesh, limewire are chock full of viruses. Torrents are always clean. Or, at least 99% of the time they are anyway. I have never ever gotten one infected.

Post 43 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Thursday, 03-Jul-2008 22:10:53

I know people who have never had a problem with Lime Wire, but I totally agree with you that piracy is always gonna be around. No sense making something illegal when it has no consequences anyways. If everyone who uses p2p clients/torrents were caught, 3 quarters of the population would be in jail by now. So I agree that the government needs to give that up.

Post 44 by Squiggles (Account disabled) on Friday, 04-Jul-2008 9:13:08

If we look at media piracy such as music, or movies, we see that more of these new encryption algorithms are supposedly making it harder for us to crack or decode. But logic should tell you that there might be someone who is behind the scenes here who is leaking the cracking process out, or that maybe we are just humans so any simple minded person can reverse engineer things with no problem at all, barring they are sufficient in a language or 2. It is a busy work war I say and we're getting no where. Torrents I heard were supposedly blocked by Comcast, but I haven't had a problem and neither has a few of my friends. As I've said Imesh, limewire and many other I've gotten nothing but spyware. Then you could go into how the government is slip streaming viruses into torrents to try and get us to stop pirating, but yeah, ok, right. I wouldn't be surprised. As I've said, they are hippocrits, and they are starting a war against absolutely nothing here. But notice that a lot of the people said they wouldn't because it is "illegal" but only because they don't know how to use torrents.
step 1. www.utorrent.com. download the client
step 2. www.isohunt.com www.btmon.com www.demonoid.com if you have an account like me www.thepiratebay.com www.torrentz.com www.torrentfreak.com

Ok my point is go grab UTorrent and have fun. Never mind this illegal business because it is all made up. That's right, it is all made up by these do nothing institutions that want to make you think you are some terrible person. I dont' fall for it, so cmon folks, keep on seeding! We aren't pirating someone's life it is software. Simple bits, 1's and 0's. We aren't trying to kill big foot. These are minor issues of society here. I said it once and I'll say it again, software piracy is a busy work war. There is nothing morally wrong or legally wrong about it. In fact morals have nothing to do with this anyway. I know some loony bin will probably bring it up.

Have fun, and dammit, keep on seeding!
